Your Opinion Please!

February 28, 2008 by Joe · 6 Comments

Hey folks. Just wanted to ask your opinion on something. What do you guys think of this desk below? I’ve already asked a few people and got some pretty positive feedback. I’m going for a modern look for my new blogging desk :-) A modern overall look for my room!

I dunno about you guys, but I likes it a lot! It’s not the coup de grace for my new blogging setup. The best part is still a bit further off. Hopefully it will be easier to get when I make some more money online. I’ve dropped paid posting for now, so it’ll probably be a little more difficult. Thanks to Ryan Powell for the image above!

Hope to hear from you guys. Semi-Pro screening is tomorrow, I hope it’s enjoyable. I’ll be sure to let you guys know.

Talk soon!

Movies This Weekend! 2/29/08

February 27, 2008 by Joe · 3 Comments

Wow, I can’t believe its the end of February already. Overall, I think it wasn’t that bad for movies, but nothing overly impressive either. I only saw a couple movies… not usual for a film buff like me. Just kidding, I really don’t have too much time for movies unless I’m screening them….. which I will be doing this Thursday :-).

That being said, here are my options!

Semi-Pro - The latest Will Ferrell movie. It’s 1976, and Jackie Moon is the owner/player/coach of a fairly unsuccessful American Basketball Association team. He learns that the ABA is going to be merged with the NBA, and is extremely excited. However, things change when he finds out that his team is not one of the teams that will be merged. Not to be defeated, Moon suggests that the teams with the best records should be the ones to be merged. The league accepts his idea, and Moon must work hard promoting his team, while at the same time trying to win games so they can join the NBA elite.

How’s it Gonna Do? - Well, I can already pretty much guarantee that this is gonna be the #1 movie this weekend. That’s usually how Will Ferrell movies do. However, I can’t say that I’m overly excited for this one. It’s the same role that Mr. Ferrell has been doing for the past 5 years or so. It’s going to have its moments, that’s for sure. It will be a fun screening movie, but don’t go into expecting too much, and you’ll leave amused.

Penelope - Penelope is a young woman with a special blessing. That blessing just happens to be a pig’s nose for her nose. Every time she finds a guy, and they see her nose, they take the quickest way out possible…. which is usually the second floor window. Will she be able to find true love?

How’s it gonna do? - Well, this is definitely an interesting concept. I can’t say that I’ve heard of this one before, and I’m not even sure that my theatre is going to get the movie, but I can say that if we did, I would like to see it. I like Christina Ricci (Penelope), and it just seems like it could be a nice, funny movie. It’s not going to have a huge impact at the box office by any means (in my opinion anyway), but it could be an ok film.

The Other Boleyn Girl - Based on the novel by Phillipa Gregory, this film tells the story of two sisters who are driven by their father to pursue the King of England. Of course, he has selfish reasons as he is trying to enhance the power of his own family by getting them closer to the King. When Mary (Scarlett Johannsen) wins the affections of the king, becoming his mistress, her sister, Anne (Natalie Portman) is not to be denied. She sidesteps her sister, and the Queen. Anne will not stop until she has reached the ultimate goal, becoming Queen herself.

How’s it gonna do? - A history lesson that might actually be fun to watch, and its not hurt at all by having two of the most beautiful women in hollywood in it. I remember reading about it a lot in high school, and I never thought this story had these sort of twists in it. I’m interested, but at the same time, it feels a little old fashioned. Don’t know how into the history love story I am. I think that there will be those who are interested though. #3 for the week.

Not terrible for major releases this week. I’ll be sure to let you guys know how Semi-Pro is after seeing it on Thursday. Here are your limited releases for the week:

Chicago 10
City of Men
Beyond Belief

Hope you guys have enjoyed! Are any of you going to the movies this weekend?

Hi Honey, I’m Home!

February 26, 2008 by Joe · 1 Comment

I’ve said that every single day when I’ve gotten home this past week. Some of you who still read this blog may wonder where I’ve been. I’m sure you haven’t, but I’m going to tell you anyway. My family and I have just moved into our new home, and let me tell ya, it’s been a trip and a half. We weren’t really prepared to move, having lived in our apartment for the past 15 or so years. Needless to say, it’s taken us forever to move!

Glad to report that we are just about done though, and with that, I can return to a more normal blogging schedule.

I meant to give you guys a review of the latest movie I’ve seen. Now don’t criticize me, but I really enjoy these types of movies for some reason. The last movie I saw was Step Up 2. I thought it was really well done, and the choreography and music were excellent. For those of you who don’t know, Step Up 2 follows the story of Andie, a dancer from the streets who gets accepted into the prestigious Maryland School for the Arts.

Andie is not your typical student at this particular school. She doesn’t fit in, having not had much professional training. What drives her is her crew, and competing at the streets. However, the headmaster at her new school wants to taker her under his wing, and train her so that she can become the dancer that he sees so much potential in. This brings about conflicts with her Crew, as Andie begins to be late and even miss rehearsals for them. Not being able to deal with her anymore, she is kicked out of her crew.

Dejected, Andie struggles to deal with her new surroundings. There are people at school who are willing to help her, and they even begin to form their own crew. After a failed performance at a club, they come into school to find their studio vandalized. Now, they must try even harder to keep things together, as Andie gets expelled, and their new crew loses their morale.

No spoilers, as usual. Now this is definitely not an oscar winning performance by any means… and you’ll get my Oscar feedback soon enough. But if you like dance, then I can suggest this movie! 6.5 out of 10, a decent film overall.

Lots of stuff happening, I’ll be sure to keep you guys posted! More to come soon.

Joe’s Review: The Spiderwick Chronicles

February 18, 2008 by Joe · 1 Comment

Hey all, this is the first of two movies that I saw this weekend, and I’ll be sure to put up a review of that one soon. Just want this one to sit on top for a day or two. I saw Spiderwick Chronicles on Wednesday night… that’s right, before the rest of America! Muahaha, the benefits of being a theatre manager! Anyway, I thought this was an excellent movie.

The Spiderwick Chronicles is based on a series of books written by Tony DeTerlizzi and Holly Black. After seeing this movie, I think I’m going to head out and buy the books at some point. The books and movie explore the stories of the Grace family, who have recently moved into their Great-Aunt’s house. After they move in, Jared, one of the Grace Twins, discovers the work of Arthur Spiderwick, The Spiderwick Chronicles. After reading the book, strange things begin to happen, and Jared finds out that he has unleashed a fantastic world on to the family, filled with magic and magical creatures.

Unfortunately, these are not friendly creatures by any means. They want the book, containing all of the secrets of their world, and they want to use it for their own good. Mulgarath, their leader, is especially interested in it, and will do anything he can to get the book. As Jared and his family discover more of the secrets of this world they have unleashed, they realize that they must go back to the source to find out what to do with the book, and stop these creatures from taking over.

This movie has some great moments. I love how the creatures can’t be seen by anyone until they are spit on by Hogsqeal, who is voiced by the excellent Seth Rogan. It’s pretty funny to watch some of the people do battle against creatures they can’t see! I also enjoyed the firey Thimbletack, who takes it upon himself to protect the book with all of his tiny being.

Overall, I’d give this movie a 7 out of 10. While it is a movie aimed more towards kids, I wouldn’t necessarily say that it is a kid’s movie, and it can be enjoyable to anyone who is looking for a decent fantasy movie. I should also point out that you should pick a theatre that you know has excellent surround sound for this film, I enjoyed it that much more because of the excellent sound system in the auditorium in which I saw it!

That’s all for now… if you’ve seen it, what do you think?

Movies This Weekend! 2/14/08

February 13, 2008 by Joe · 3 Comments

Hey all, time for the weekly movies update. Seems like this is the only post I’m getting in recently. I actually tried to blog over at the new place yesterday, but it took so long to get the internet set up (wireless) that I wasn’t able to. Dang security settings on the wireless. On the plus side, it looks like I have a pretty strong signal in my new room, so it should be great for the blogging. I’ve also adjusted my hours at work, so I should have more time to blog…. though it is making me tired more quickly. I’m actually pretty tired right now, but I’ll pull through for this update!

I’ll also be trying to comment more on your blogs…. I know I’ve been lacking in comments but I have been reading. Great stuff guys… keep it up and I’ll work at the comments. Trying to build this blog back up to what it once was!

Anyway, onto the movies for the weekend. Early releases this week, with movies coming out on Valentine’s day (Thursday) instead of Friday. I’m pretty excited about a lot of the movies that come out this week.. so without further ado:

The Spiderwick Chronicles - Based on the bestselling book series. Strange things begin to happen to the Grace family when they move into the New York home of their great great uncle, Arthur Spiderwick. Unable to find the cause of the strange occurrences in their home, the family blames Jared. As Jared and his twin, along with their sister Mallory try to find out the real cause, they uncover the real secrets of the Spiderwick Estate.

How’s it gonna do - I’m really excited about this one. I love the fantasy type movies, like Harry Potter, and this one seems like that. I’ve been looking at the banner every day at work, and it just gets me more excited. A must see for me I think. I’ll probably watch it tomorrow! :-)

Definitely, Maybe - Starring Ryan Reynolds as Will Hayes, a father in his 30s going through a divorce. His daughter (played by Abigail Breslin), wants to know more about how her parents met and fell in love. Will takes her through an idealistic story of a young politician, learning the ways of New York City, and his relationship with three different women. However, he changes the name of the women, and leaves his daughter to guess which one is her mom.

How’s it gonna do - I think this one has pretty good potential as a RomCom. It’s story seems a bit more serious than last week’s big hit Fools Gold, but I think it could be perfect for the upcoming hallmark holiday. I have a feeling there will be several ladies dragging their men to this movie this weekend. I’ve heard good things though guys, so it shouldn’t be as horrible as you might think! It cracks the top 3, ending up as…. #3.

Step Up 2 The Streets - The sequel to the wildly popular Step Up. This one follows the story of the rebellious dancer, Andie. She is trying to fit in at the elite Maryland School of the Arts. Here, she meets Chase, one of the hottest dancers at the school. This one brings back much of the original crew from the first movie.

How’s it gonna do - Sorry for the bad synopsis, but it just kinda ended on Rotten Tomatoes. Anyway, I’m pretty excited about this one too. I enjoyed the first one after being forced to watch it, and this one has Briana Evigan. She’s smokin in the trailers, and I can’t wait to see her on the big screen!

Jumper - An Adaptation of Steven Gould’s novels of people who can transport themselves through time and space. Starring Hayden Christiansen and Samuel L. Jackson. Also featuring Rachel Bilson.

How’s it gonna do - This one has an interesting concept, and it looks action packed, so I think it could do quite well. If I weren’t so interested in Spiderwick, I would see this one tomorrow. This one is going to be good, but it also has stiff competition this weekend, which could hurt its overall numbers. A top 5 finish for sure.

That’s it for the major releases this weekend. I’m not going to mention the limited releases for now cuz I’ve been working on this post for about an hour now… lol. Guess I’m not the quickest blogger, that’s for sure. I will take my pick for #1 this week. I think it’s going to be… and I’m reaching here… Step Up 2. The first one was wildly popular, and this one has some hot songs and dancing going on in it. Here’s the trailer!

Just wanted to go over a few things that I appreciate:

  • Nice Customers at the movies.
  • My girlfriend and family.
  • The readers of this blog.
  • Being able to blog!

Something I don’t appreciate is being taken for a ride by Comcast. Blargh!!! From the moment I ordered their service, and the saleswoman celebrated her sale (she thought she hung up), it’s been nothing but trouble. We’re not getting all of the channels that we thought we’re getting, and our boxes turn out to be more than we thought!

I figured that calling them would help alleviate this, but after talking to them, I realize how important good customer service is. They kept walking me around in circles, telling me that they were sorry I was misinformed, but that there was nothing they could do about it. Ok, I’m not expecting anything extravagant, but cmon… we’re throwing a lot of money their way. Looking online, I found some pretty good deals that might make it better, so I called back and asked if we could get some of those deals. Things like free equipment, cash back, etc.

Of course, we’ve got nothing to show out of it. They basically offered us a plan where we can pay 20 dollars more per month for ALL of their channels (normally $30). I don’t know if its worth it. I’m thinking about writing into the consumerist about it, but I’d like to see what you guys have to say about it first… do any of you have any experience dealing with Comcast?

This is why I wanted Verizon FiOS in the first place. Hurry up and be available in my area!

Movies This Weekend! 2/8/08

February 6, 2008 by Joe · Leave a Comment

Hi everyone, I’ve been really busy lately and I’m hoping to recap it throughout my network of blogs throughout the remainder of the week. I’ve been to the Beanpot, watched the Superbowl, went TV Shopping, and watched another hockey game… lol.

I wanted to let you guys know what’s coming out this week! I will update with more details tomorrow, but the major releases are:

Wild West Comedy Show - This one is a kind of comedy stage show with comedians picked by Vince Vaughn himself, star of such films as Dodgeball. They travel throughout the country, performing 30 shows in 30 days. This film chronicles their journey.

Fool’s Gold - Starring Kate Hudson and Matthew McConnaghey. Trying to follow up on the success of their last collaboration, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, this pair plays a divorced couple that team up in order to find the missing treasure that they have always tried to find. Well, Matt M’s character anyway. Judging from the commercials, this one seems to be pretty funny, and I admit I liked their last collaboration.

Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins - Woohoo, a Martin Lawrence movie! Ok, maybe I’m not that enthusiastic about it, but it could be good! This one definitely seems like it could have its moments, but then again, most movies appear to have moments when all you’ve seen is the trailer.

Woohoo! Not really. I don’t really think these will do too well. Especially seeing as the Hannah Montana concert movie was number 1 last week.

I’ll make predictions and give a little synopsis tomorrow.. right now I need to sleep. Too many late nights and tough losses. This blogger needs some rest.

Update: I no longer need rest, but am in need of a haircut. I also waited 3 hours for cable to be set up today. I have internet! In the new home anyway, look for me to become a much better blogger with updates! And a proper desk!
